With food prices on the increase, there is growing interest in local food production. More than thirty residents are calling for allotments to be provided in the town, and St Ives Town Council has been investigating potential sites in the area.
Councillor Tim Andrewes, who chairs the Council’s Allotments Subcommittee, explains that the availability of land has proved a difficult obstacle: ‘With development pressures so strong in the St Ives area, there is a shortage of land that could be used for allotments. However, the Council is working hard to identify a suitable plot for residents to grow their own veg on.’
In April this year, a new farmers’ market was launched in St Ives – operating every Thursday from 9.30am to 3pm at the Backpackers, just up the road from Royal Square. The farmers' market is launched in April '08 The aim of the market is to make fresh local produce more widely available to local shoppers, and around a dozen farmers and food producers attend the market every week.
A farmers’ market for St Ives was proposed in the Green Party’s local election manifesto and it is great to see the idea coming to fruition. |
