The recent downturn in the housing market has meant that many of the luxury flats built in the area are standing empty while the need for affordable housing for local families is greater than ever.

The present planning guidelines, which only require developers to include an element of affordable housing in a development of more than 14 units, have failed to meet local housing needs.

The guidelines need to be changed as a matter of urgency and a target of 50% affordable housing in all new housing schemes is needed if we are to make any impact on the local housing problem.

The Green Party also advocates a policy requiring new homes to be for residential use only, rather than second homes or holiday lets.
