In April the County Council took over responsibility for parking enforcement and there has been widespread criticism of the way in which this has affected St Ives. The town used to have a full time traffic warden but since April the County Council has provided only part time cover and there are several days each week when there is no parking enforcement at all.

Councillor Ron Tulley commented: “With the large increase in the volume of traffic during the summer, it is essential that parking is regulated so that the town is not reduced to grid lock. The level of cover provided by the County Council has been totally inadequate.”

As a result of these widespread concerns, St Ives Town Council offered to use some of its own funds to finance an improved level of cover for the remainder of this season and they have demanded that the County Council provide a more adequate level of cover in future years.

The County Council is on the verge of agreeing a 30 year waste management strategy which is almost certain to lead to the building of an incinerator in the county and high levels of waste being produced and burnt for decades to come.
