Unitary Authority: More Devolution Needed PDF Print E-mail

St Ives Town Council has agreed in principle to take on more services, following the decision to create a single council for Cornwall.

Councillor Tim Andrewes, who sits on the Town Council’s new panel looking into the issue, said: “With the demise of Penwith District Council, it is important that many of the services Penwith operates are controlled at the local level instead of being transferred upwards to the new One Cornwall authority. Local people need to have as strong an influence as possible on how their services are provided.”

The Town Council is looking to take on a range of services starting with the management of some key local amenities. The Council’s willingness to take on more services is conditional on a financial agreement with the new authority to ensure no unfair burden on local taxpayers.
