The recent sharp increases in the price of fuel have highlighted how important it is to provide as many goods and services as possible at a local level. This not only helps hard pressed families reduce their travel expenditure but it also helps to sustain strong local communities.
It is very disappointing that here in St Ives and in many other small communities, the actions of both central and local government have put so many local services under threat.
Local post offices are threatened with closure; the local recycling facility at Penbeagle has been shut; the local Job Centre has closed; some health services have been moved from Treliske to Derriford; and the planning system gives local councils inadequate powers when developers want to shut much-valued local shops.
The Green Party is pledged to support communities in their fight to maintain a full range of local services and facilities.
