County Council to invest over £21 million in pollution PDF Print E-mail

Cornwall County Council has agreed to spend £21 million on Newquay Airport, at a time when concerns are growing about the contribution of air travel to climate change. This is on top of the Council’s annual subsidy to the airport of £1 million worth of taxpayers’ money. Climate change has been recognised by the Government’s chief scientific adviser as a bigger threat than terrorism. It is being fuelled by so-called ‘greenhouse gases’, chief among which is carbon dioxide. Air travel is now the fastest growing contributor of carbon dioxide emissions, and there is an urgent need to reduce this pollution if long-term damage from climate change is to be avoided.

The Lib Dem run County Council is literally flying in the face of these concerns, however, by committing large sums of public money to the support and development of Newquay Airport. It amounts to a huge investment in pollution. The Lib Dems’ decision shows just how hollow their claims are on green issues.

The findings of the recently-published Stern Report on climate change echo what the Green Party has been arguing for years: that the cost of inaction will be far higher than tackling climate change now. The switch to a low carbon society could also bring many social and economic benefits.
