The recent campaign to keep Ayr Field as an open space shows how important these green areas are for local people.
Open spaces provide somewhere safe for children to play and let off steam. They are attractive natural areas for relaxing and enjoyment. They provide an important outdoor venue for community events, sports and other activities.
They can also be an important home for wildlife – particularly birds and butterflies – in the otherwise increasingly built-up areas of our town.
The Green Party supports efforts to save Ayr Field and other local green spaces. We want to see a range of spaces provided for the community – from playing fields and formal gardens, to ‘pocket parks’ on small pieces of disused land within housing estates. These areas need to be safe to use, and well looked after, to maximise their use by residents.
